People "pin" pictures of things that inspire them; interiors, recipes, fashion, etc,. and then you can comment on them or repin them to your own boards for future reference. Its a wealth of fabulous ideas!

CAG Fashion Show

March 9 the girls participated in the Children's Arts Guild fashion show for the second year in a row. This year the girls wore classic Lilly Pulitzer shift dresses. We got off to a rough start the morning of the show. Claudia smeared lip gloss all in the front of her hair and Mary Slayden decided to use the flat iron for her Barbie, which melted,and then got in my hair. I had some pretty pomander balls made for them to carry down the runway which unfortunately fell apart. Despite the set backs, the girls did great and it was a nice morning.

This week, I'm all about these Turkish Bath towels called Pestamels. Really thin, but super absorbent and fast drying, they also come in a huge variety of stripes and colors. Generous in size, they would be perfect used as a towel, sarong wrap or light blanket. Roll up a couple and throw them in your beach bag. Myself a huge believer in family dinners, I was pleasantly surprised to discover this book while browsing Anthropologie last week. And then the same week, I caught the author, Laurie David, promoting it on Martha Stewart. Not just a cookbook, the book includes ideas for conversations, sharing family stories, games and family involvement in the meal. "Research has proven that everything we worry about as parents—from drugs to alcohol, promiscuity, to obesity, academic achievement and just good old nutrition— can all be improved by the simple act of eating and talking together around the table."

Also be sure to check out the accompanying website. A favorite feature from the Table Talk page is the Huffpost Dinner Download. The Family Dinner has teamed with the Huffington Post to highlight a compelling news topic each week, with questions that promote discussion among the family. This is such good stuff and I will definitely be adding The Family Dinner to my evening repertoire.

I first saw the Southern My Way cookbook at the Country Living Fair, where Gena Knox was signing and selling her new book. Turns out she is from Reynolds Georgia, a town very near Ft. Valley, where my husband Charlie is from. Quite a coincidence since these are really small towns in middle Georgia. Her book caught my attention with its beautiful food and farm photography and recipes for traditional, Southern food that Gena has made more contemporary, easy and light. I didn't buy the book at the time, but should've because I've been thinking about it ever since. Lucky for me, it is available from her website, which also includes recipes and great writing about favorite Southern artisans. Love her.

I'm off for a girls' weekend shopping excursion to Atlanta. Our primary reason for the trip is the Country Living Fair at Stone Mountain, Georgia. We heard it was good, but this is the first time it is being held in the South, so we don't really know what to expect. I also like to use the Bath and Body Works Wallflowers, so yesterday I went and bought the Leaves scent and matching candles, but now I'm afraid my house smells like the Cracker Barrel, so I'm going back to Gingersnap. The scent is so complex and rich. Can't really go wrong with Votivo. Its a little hard to find. In Birmingham, I've bought it in the past at Leaf and Petal, At Home and Saks.

Race for the Cure

Pump It Up!

Love the beautiful fall weather we've had for more than a week now. And with the fall, I also love all things pumpkin. Last night I bought some Blue Moon pumpkin ale, lit my favorite fall candle and made this easy and delish recipe that I found in the October issue of InStyle. It was a great way to add a little fall flavor to one of our standard weeknight meals, and the house smelled so good.

Pumpkin-Spiced Chicken Tacos
Ingredients
1lb. ground chicken
1tbsp. McCormick pumpkin pie spice
1 package taco seasoning
1 cup water
1 bag Tostitos Scoops

Toppings
1 avocado
1 white onion, finely chopped
1 tbsp cilantro, minced

Brown meat in a large skillet. Use a spoon to skim off any excess fat from pan. Stir in pumpkin spice and taco seasoning mix. Add 1 cup of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 5-10 minutes until thickened. Spoon in to chips and sprinkle with desired toppings.
*I used lettuce and made mine into more of a taco salad without the chips. I also added a little nonfat Greek yogurt instead of sour cream.

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens annual Antiques in the Gardens show is next weekend and I just found out that Miles Redd will be giving a lecture Friday afternoon. Love the title of the lecture- Decorating in a Cold Climate: A Field Guide for Showing Yankees How Its Done. Miles Redd is a fabulous and revered New York decorator, originally from the South, who is frequently featured in design magazines and blogs. Must get a babysitter and go!

Mary Slayden participated in a cheerleading clinic that the high school cheerleaders held for the elementary girls. There were 80 girls so I couldn't really get close enough to get a good picture of her doing the cheers. Is it bad to say that I really want one of my girls to be a cheerleader?

My friends and I have been making a ton of this Buffalo Dip to eat while watching football games. Its so good. I also successfully lightened it up by using fat free cheeses and lowfat ranch. Served with carrots and celery, its pretty healthy for tailgate food. The dip is really easy to make, but in a pinch, Dirt Road Gourmet has a great version right out of the freezer at Western.

Mary Slayden had her first dance class this week too. This year she is doing jazz/tap with Dance With Lauren. This is the MBE group of girls before they changed into their dance clothes. They have 45 minutes after school before dance starts, so a couple of the moms meet them out front, provide a snack, help them get changed, etc. It was purple day at school, which is the reason they are all so well coordinated.

Last week I received the new Restoration Hardware catalog in the mail and it is fabulous. Their new incarnation is gorgeous and totally more my style. I could decorate my whole house out of this catalog. Its like my favorite antique store, but with things I might actually can afford. They have also revamped the physical store to showcase their great new pieces. The whole store is painted a gorgeous greige color called slate that I am dying to use somewhere in my house, which desperately needs some updating. Today was Claudia's first day of preschool in the 2's. This year she starts carpool instead of me walking in to drop her off and pick her up. Since bid day was Saturday at many schools across the South, its fitting that I discovered these new Lilly sorority prints and accessories. I love that the prints incorporate the colors, symbols and mascots of the sorority. Pansies, pine trees, dolphins and deltas can be spotted in Tri Delt's yellow and blue print. Lilly has created several great accessories using the print. How perfect is the scarf for an early fall football game? And I'm loving the tote and makeup bags. Just got word that a Lululemon store is opening up in Soho this Friday. I could not be more excited about this. While in La Jolla last Spring, I visited one of their stores for the first time and splurged on an outfit. Definitely worth it, as this is this is all I want to wear to the gym now. So soft and durable. Can't wait to check out the inventory and add to my Lululemon wardrobe at the grand opening on Friday! If I'm going to go to the gym and be in workout clothes every day, at least they should be cute ones.

A good friend picked this bracelet up for me from the Tory Burch store in Atlanta this weekend. I've been wanting it for several seasons and couldn't get myself to a store. Love it! One friend says that TB is out of style but I don't think so. I still love her stuff.

I snagged this fabulous, Chanel fall 2010 nail polish while out shopping last week. I can't tell you how excited I was. A) Because it was a splurge for me. I usually just use the polish at the pedi place and B) Because I was never able to find last season's "it" shade (particulaire) and I was able to get my hands on this one before it sold out. HOWEVER, when I went to leave for the pedi place, I couldn't find it anywhere. Lost in my house somewhere, or I must've thrown it away by accident. It's such a great color that I'm just going to have to go buy it again. Check it out, the picture does not do it justice.

P.S. Instead I used Parlez-Vouz OPI. Its also a pretty good, purply griege color and free at your local nail salon.

I'm excited about the Grease sing-a-long, although I need to find out when and if it is playing in a theater near me. They are putting the lyrics across the bottom of the screen. I'm not bragging or anything, but I don't really need that. I think I first saw this movie when it first came out in 1978, so I was about MSP's age. You think I should take her and show her how I can rock out all the lyrics and dialogue?

Atlanta Trip

Last week, Dear Dear took us to Atlanta for a short but very fun and action packed trip. We started with lunch at the American Girl Bistro, then shopped at the American Girl store, where Mary Slayden got Ashley's ears pierced and picked out several matching outfits and accessories. (Ashley is her doll.) Claudia got a high chair for her Bitty Baby. Mom and I got to do a little shopping at the North Georgia Outlets before we headed to the hotel to check in and take a swim in the pool. The Alpharetta Marriott offers an American Girl package which included a special check in, doll beds in the room (that you get to keep!), milk and cookies delivered that night, a treat from the restaurant or gift shop and breakfast the next morning. On Friday we visited the Georgia Aquarium and the World of Coke. A great time was had by all!

The Pillars of the Earth

I recently reread one of my all time favorite novels, The Pillars of the Earth, by Ken Follett. Then, yesterday, while in Barnes and Noble, I saw a display advertising the Pillars of the Earth miniseries starting July 24. What a coincidence! This is such good news and the book will make a fabulous movie. More info at this Pillars of the Earth site.

Saw this new book at Barnes and Noble last night and immediately ran home and ordered it from Amazon. I'm so mad I missed the Birmingham signing at the end of April. What I wouln't give for a home designed by Montgomery Architect and Designer, Bobby McAlpine. The book is chock full of his stunning designs.

The new Miley Cyrus video debuted today. What do you think? I think its a great video- FOR ADULTS. It is extremely bothersome that she is only 17 and coming straight off Hannah Montana, legions of little girls, including my own, worship her and want to be just like her. The good thing is now that she is no longer with Disney, this won't be on the Disney channel and msp won't ever see it. I hope.
